Peer Specialist

The paraprofessional may have a bachelor’s degree in a field other than behavioral sciences or minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent. Certified Peer Specialist desired; or obtains certification within 6 months of employment. Experience with individuals with mental illness or similar human-services needs, or other applicable experience desired. May have related training (e.g., certified occupational therapy assistant, home health care aide) or work experience (e.g., teaching) and life experience. Previous experience in case management, advocacy or similar role desirable. Past recipient of public or private mental health services. Function as a core member of a collaborative multi-disciplinary Early Treatment Program whose interventions and treatment are focused on helping individuals navigate the road to recovery from an episode of psychosis, including supporting efforts to function well at home, on the job, at school, and in the social world. As an Associate to the Care Manager, the Peer Specialist is responsible for responding to the needs of program participants. This position serves as an advocate providing peer support services and information a variety of settings. Participates in the provision of rehabilitative services to those we serve by providing practical help and supports, advocacy, coordination, side-by-side individualized support, problem solving, direct assistance, and training.
