July 9, 2013 (Fort Lauderdale, FL) - Health Foundation of South Florida has awarded a $100,000 grant to Henderson Behavioral Health to support the “HILL (Helping Individuals Live Longer) Project”. The HILL Project integrates primary care and behavioral health services for underserved, uninsured and disenfranchised adults with a severe mental illness. The hallmark of successful integration is coordinating behavioral health, primary care, wellness promotion and education services; the HILL Project accomplishes this at Henderson’s service locations throughout Broward County.
As Henderson CEO Dr. Steven Ronik commented, “People with serious mental illnesses have a life expectancy that is 25 years shorter than the general population. Our clients are sadly dying from treatable and preventable health conditions. Conditions such as dislipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and of course tobacco use are taking our clients far too soon. To address these issues, Henderson began integrating primary healthcare with our existing services. We aim to improve an individual’s health outcomes and lower overall health costs. We also want to improve the experience our clients have with the healthcare system by being their ‘Health Home’ and make significant improvements in their lives.”
The HILL Project will improve health outcomes, wellness, and resiliency by improving the access and quality of services currently available to adults with serious mental illness. Service quality is enhanced by fidelity to the principles of informed choice, recovery-focused and person-centered care, and evidence-based practices. The HFSF will help support a Care Manager position in the HILL Project. Their role shall be coordinating the delivery of an integrated array of medical, self-help, social, supportive, and rehabilitative services designed around the needs and desires of each individual the HILL Project serves. The HFSF-funded Care Manager will be a key component to decreasing the dramatic disparities in mortality and morbidity of individuals with severe mental illness.
